Position: Assistant Public Defender – Misdemeanor Division

Location: Painesville, OH

Hours: Full-Time (M-F, 8-4:30 occasional weekends and evenings)

Pay: $75,000 + Based on Experience/Year

POSITION SUMMARY

Responsible for providing legal representation to indigent clients charged with misdemeanor criminal offenses. This role advocates for clients throughout all stages of the criminal justice process while protecting constitutional rights and ensuring effective legal representation.


KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Represent clients during arraignments, hearings, pleas, trials, sentencings, and post-sentencing proceedings.
  • Conduct client interviews and gather information for case preparation.
  • Review discovery materials and assist with investigations.
  • Research legal issues and prepare legal filings and motions.
  • Negotiate plea agreements when appropriate.
  • Advocate for clients’ rights and best interests throughout the legal process.
  • Collaborate with investigators, paralegals, social workers, interns, and other defense team members.
  • Maintain professional communication with courts, prosecutors, law enforcement, and community partners.


QUALIFICATIONS

  • Juris Doctor (J.D.) degree from an accredited law school.
  • Licensed to practice law in the State of Ohio.
  • Strong legal research, writing, and oral advocacy skills.
  • Knowledge of criminal law, court procedures, ethics, and evidence rules.
  • Ability to manage a caseload independently.
  • Strong communication, judgment, and interpersonal skills.
  • Commitment to serving underprivileged individuals and protecting constitutional rights.
